Jane Austen and the Weather
Kate Halsey of the University of Stirling will discuss some of the ways Austen uses the weather in her novels: to structure plot, to set the mood, and to engage with the philosophical ideas of her time. Focusing mainly on Northanger Abbey, she will two storms used to structure the novel and to distinguish her heroine's journey from superstition to rationality. Blow, ye tempest!
