North Texas Region: Jane Austen Birthday Luncheon
Featuring Dr. Janine Barchas
Join us to hear Dr. Janine Barchas, Professor of English at the University of Texas at Austin, champion cheap early reprintings of Jane Austen, arguing that only the inexpensive books read by ordinary people make authors truly canonical. She shares her research about low-brow copies from the 19th century and, in a few cases, also the stories of the Victorian readers who once owned them. She will explain why many versions of Austen go unrecorded and unstudied. She calls her approach “hard-core bibliography meets the Antiques Roadshow.” It is part of her forthcoming book and a radical revision of the talk she gave at the AGM in Kansas City.
In addition, a delicious luncheon will be enjoyed with plenty of time to shop at the Regency Emporium featuring a large selection of items sure to please any Regency lover for Christmas.
