Jane Austen and Politics - POSTPONED

Mission inn presidential loungeOut of an abundance of caution during these unprecedented times, we are postponing our May 2, 2020, event at the Mission Inn, "Ms. Austen Goes to Washington."  The new date is Saturday, May 1, 2021.

We will meet at the historic Mission Inn Hotel and Spa to explore politics during the Regency era as well as Jane Austen’s influence today.

 Featured speakers:

  • Congressman Mark Takano (D-Riverside), who taught British literature in public schools for more than 20 years before being elected to . Congress in 2012, where he established a Jane Austen reading group.
  • Sheryl Craig, an Austen scholar and faculty member at the University of Central Missouri for more than 20 years. A popular AGM speaker, Sheryl has published dozens of articles on Jane Austen, served as editor of JASNA News for 10 years, and wrote Jane Austen and the State of the Nation.

The Mission Inn is a living museum and home to priceless treasures and artifacts. Tours will be available following the meeting for those interested. The hotel features two on-site chapels, a collection of hundreds of bells, and countless priceless paintings, including Henry Chapman Ford’s oil paintings of the 21 California missions. Especially fitting for our theme, Presidents Roosevelt, Taft, Hoover, Nixon, Reagan, and Bush Jr. have all stayed at the Mission Inn, which includes a presidential lounge.

A block of rooms at a reduced rate is available for attendees who wish to spend one or two nights at the Mission Inn as part of the JASNA Southwest festivities. The Inn suggests booking rooms early for this in-demand location.
