Vermont Region: Jane Austen and Autistic Spectrum Disorders
A 21st-Century Perspective
Phyllis Ferguson Bottomer uses the professional knowledge gained working with children and adults with communication challenges to re-examine the challenges some of Jane Austen's characters have with conversation, empathy, and social interaction. Her book So Odd a Mixture: Along the Autistic Spectrum in Pride and Prejudice brought this topic to the fore, and she has travelled the world over to give talks at various Austen Society meetings and conferences. This presentation is free and open to the public.
